Super Technoflex90 SHD-GC Mining Cables Eutectic Salt Cured
Why Salt Cure?
The use of molten eutectic salts to vulcanize or cure the widest possible ranges of thermosetting and elastomer cables has been known for a long time; in fact for over 25 years.
"Salt Cure" technology was developed by General Engineering of England and adapted to the homogenous curing of mining cables to provide a tough and dense jacket comparable to the lead cure process that has been in existence for many years.
This fully integrated system has proven beyond a doubt its ability to handle virtually any combination of cables and provides the most uniform cure available.
How does the Salt Cure work?
The cable enters a pressurized environment of hot molten eutectic salt which is composed of 53% Potassium Nitrate, 40% Sodium Nitrite and 7% Sodium Nitrate. The extremely efficient heat transfer capability of this environment imparts the rugged qualities and "dry cure" characteristics necessary for mining applications. The cable is then cooled in water, still under pressure, which locks in these desired characteristics.
The Salt Cure System :
The salt cure system makes use of an inorganic salt which is stable and non-toxic. Salt is melted in a reservoir tube assembly directly below the main tube through which the cable passes. The molten salt circulates under pressure into the main tube and flows counter-current to the cable being processed. It leaves the main tube via a downward return leg to the reservoir tube.
At the end of the salt tube the cable leaves via a separation chamber. From this section the cable passes into the pressurized water cooling environment which is arranged similar to the salt portion, making the system completely self-contained. The cable then leaves via a standard dual exit seal.
The whole system is integrally pressurized from one source, and because of the construction and pre-determined levels of salt and water a complete balance of the pressure is maintained.
The Salt Cure technology provides much more flexibility in the manufacturing process and results in advantages such as longer shipping lengths and shorter lead times. In addition, product advantages such as tough, dense jacket with smooth abrasion resistant finishes are obtained.
The coal industry's continuing need for reliable mining cable coincided with the development of this remarkable "Salt Cure" vulcanizing technology. Sensing an opportunity to serve the coal industry better, Trans Canada Wire & Cable has developed "Super Technoflex90" SHD-GC Cables with outstanding flexibility, flame resistance and tear strength. Specially constructed to withstand aging, heat and acid waters inherent in mine service.
The "Technoflex" business philosophy: to better serve the needs of Canadian industry.
